EPA Market Update (9/12/09): purslane and Indian peaches

Hello there!

It's not often that a loyal shopper such as yourself sends us a note, so when somebody does, we listen. This week, we received a message about purslane -- a relatively unknown vegetable that is featured every week at our Market. It was so useful that we're passing along some key points.

Purslane is sometimes thought of as a weed (though, if you think like your farmers' market, there are no weeds, only people who inappropriately label out-of-place plants as such). It grows wild in and around East Palo Alto in low-lying areas, and is easy to miss given its low profile. And the best news is this: it has fantastic nutritional benefits. Look for it this weekend, in organic form, under the refreshingly cool shade of Tu Universo's tent.

Lastly, you know the best time of summer has arrived when Indian (blood) peaches show up at Transito Zamudio's stall. We didn't name them, so don't blame us, but holy smokes, these tangy-sweet globes of heaven are delicious! Find them this Saturday for somewhere around $1.50 per pound.

The fun begins this Saturday at 2pm, and lasts, as always, until 5pm. We expect to have a scrumptious assortment of delicious fruits and vegetables, including:

* purslane and bitter melon (the nutritional benefits are beyond description);

* organic yellow corn (the delicious kind);

* organic peppers (serrano and bell), lettuce, and cabbage (yum, yum, yum and yum);

* sweet potatoes;

* okra (come early for the best selection);

* heirloom tomatoes! (oh so sweet and juicy);

* freshly-made hummos and other Mediterranean snacks (made right in Belmont, and perfect for appetizers and healthy snacks);

* tangy Indian peaches, sweet white peaches, multiple kinds of nectarines, plums and pluots;

* strawberries (arrive early before they sell out);

* watermelons;

* yummy honey (ask Transito Zamudio);

* nopales, chayote, basil, cilantro, cucumbers, broccoli, mint, onions, greens, and other vegetables; and

* much more!

No ocurre con mucha frecuencia cuándo un cliente leal como usted mismo nos envía una nota, así que cuando alguien lo hace, escuchamos. Esta semana, recibimos un mensaje acerca de verdolaga -- una verdura relativamente desconocida que es representada cada semana en nuestro Mercado. Fue tan útil que pasamos por algunos puntos claves abajo.

Verdolaga es pensado a veces de como una mala hierba. Crece salvajemente en y alrededor de East Palo Alto en áreas bajas, y es fácil de perder, dado su perfil bajo. Y las mejores noticias son esto: tiene beneficios fantásticos de salud. Usted lo encontrará este fin de semana, en la forma orgánica, bajo la sombra refrescarmente fresca de Tu Universo.

Por último, usted sabe que el mejor tiempo del verano ha llegado cuándo los melocotones Indios (de sangre) aparezca en el establo de Transito Zamudio. Nosotros no los denominamos, así que no nos culpa. ¡Estos globos dulces del cielo son deliciosos! Encuéntrelos este sábado por alrededor de $1,50 por libra.
