Fall is here!

Saturday, October 3, 2009

You know, it may not feel like it, but fall has come. How do we know? Well, the apples are here, with persimmons not too far behind! We also know because they've started to put the Christmas decorations out at the local stores. Can you believe it? That means that things are about to get tight. You know the holidays are expensive, but shopping at our Market doesn't have to be. Check out our new feature, What Does $5 Buy?, for some tips.

Update 4:00pm October 2nd, 2009: the Hartley Backyard Garden is coming back! They'll be selling their EPA-grown greens, tomatoes, okra and (maybe) squash. Arrive early, because last week, they sold out. Are you interested in selling the food you grow at the farmers' market? It's easy, free, and you get to keep all of the money you make. Click here for more information.

This Saturday, we expect to have:

  • organic veggies, including broccolini, watercress, heirloom carrots (big and purple!), and lettuce;
  • okra (come early for the best selection);
  • purslane and bitter melon (the health benefits are beyond description);
  • organic yellow corn (the delicious kind);
  • tomatoes! (they're getting juicier and juicier);
  • freshly-made hummos and other Mediterranean snacks (made right in Belmont, and perfect for appetizers);
  • white peaches, nectarines, and pluots (try them!);
  • strawberries (from Salinas);
  • delicious apples;
  • yummy honey;
  • watermelon;
  • nopales, chayote, basil, cilantro, cucumbers, broccoli, mint, onions, greens, and other vegetables; and
  • much more!
