EPA Market Update (10/27/09): Two Fall Holidays this Weekend

Este email viene en español al fin del mensaje.

The leaves are falling, there's a chill in the air, and this means that Fall is fast approaching. This weekend, our community will celebrate two important October Holidays. This Saturday is Halloween, so many of you are getting ready to dress up and eat candy all night long. But before your night full of spooky fun, come and celebrate Halloween with your neighbors. After all, you might as well eat something healthy before filling up on sugar!

On Sunday, our Latino community will celebrate Dia de los Muertos, another festive and important holiday that is focused on remembering and praying for those who have passed away. Last week market vendor Tu Universo Organics brought large bunches of marigolds that are perfect for decorating your altar. Think about stopping by this week to pick up some of your own.

Even though fall is in the air, here in the Bay Area we have been blessed with warm weather that should continue through the weekend. Let's enjoy our community farmer's market while the sunshine lasts! The affordable fun begins this Saturday at 2pm, and lasts, as always, until 5pm. We expect to have a scrumptious assortment of delicious fruits and vegetables, including:

* juicy apples and the first of this fall's persimmons
* taro root and leaves (have you tried them yet?);
* fresh peanuts (you roast them how you like them);
* tasty sugarcane (yum yum yum);
* purslane and bitter melon (the nutritional benefits are beyond description);
* rainbow chard (not just pretty to look at);
* organic peppers (serrano and bell), lettuce, and cabbage (yum, yum, yum and yum);
* sweet potatoes;
* jicama;
* okra (come early for the best selection);
* heirloom tomatoes (sweet and juicy);
* freshly-made hummos and other Mediterranean snacks (made right in Belmont, and perfect for appetizers and healthy snacks);
* strawberries (arrive early before they sell out);
* yummy honey (ask Transito Zamudio);
* nopales, chayote, basil, cilantro, cucumbers, broccoli, mint, onions, greens, and other vegetables; and
* much more!

EBT/food stamps, WIC and Senior FMNP checks always accepted.
* EBT: the market accepts EBT/food stamps every Saturday.
* WIC: we're happy to accept WIC FMNP market coupons.
* EPA Fresh Checks: if eligible, we'll give you $5 to spend at the Market. For more information, click here.
